Call for strike 2019

Demonstration on the Women*‘s Strike on the 8th March 2019 – the women*’s strike committee Augsburg calls for a strike!

„When we stop working, the world stands still.“

March 8 is International Women’s Day. We have been striking, arguing and fighting for our rights and against oppression for over 100 years. A movement of striking women* and queers is spreading across the world, from Poland to Argentina, from New York to Hong Kong, from Spain to Nigeria to Australia. We in Augsburg, too, have reason to strike and we say: Enough is enough! Let’s strike together on March 8 in order to change the state of society!

Why a women*’s strike?
We are constantly discriminated against, oppressed and exploited. We are belittled and made to feel small every day with hurtful jokes, comments, assaults and physical violence. Our work is undervalued and we earn less than men. At home we take on countless hours of educational, household and care work. We often provide emotional support for family, friends, partners and colleagues. In old age we barely make ends meet with our pension, if at all. We are expected to do this work unnoticed, without complaint and quite naturally with a smile.

We will not put up with this any longer! We strike!
In the whole world people are organising for a women*’s strike. They fight against discrimination, violence against women*, unequal pay and the right shift. In Germany, too, there will be women*’s strike in many cities on the 8th of March. We want to make social problems visible. Discrimination and devaluation of women* affects all of us and have to be abolished. Only then, a good life for all is possible.

We call women* and people in solidarity for a strike on the 8th of March! Workers, students, house wives and pensioners – we want to strike all together. Everyone according to their possibilities.

If you can, do not go to labor that day. Leave the housework for one day, do not go to school and care for yourself! Let’s spend the day together, sharing and making plans! Even seemingly small gestures have great effect! Get dressed in purple, hang an apron out of the window, or show in your own way your solidarity with the strike.

There will be a diverse program with speeches, music and performances. It starts at 2 pm at Moritzplatz. At 3.30 we will start a colourful and loud demonstration with female DJs. Afterwards we will assemble again until 6 at Moritzplatz. There will be an aftershow in City Club/Café.

If you have ideas and want to get involved, contact us. We look forward to receiving an e-mail to frauenstreikaux@riseup.net or a message to our Facebook page “Feminismus in Augsburg”.

But above all: come to the strike with us!

To people in solidarity:
Please contact us if you would like to organize the child and family care, provide the strikers with food during the event, provide translation or medical care. Or you develop your own ideas how you can support us women* in our strike.

The event will not provide a stage for campaigning, party advertising and discriminatory content.

* The asterisk should clarify that gender is not a rigid category. By “women*” we mean all those who understand themselves as women, no matter which gender was assigned to them at birth.
