The crisis is part of the system – let’s go on a feminist strike against capitalism and patriarchy
The Women’s* Strike Committee Augsburg calls for a demonstration on March 8, 2021
Nurses, doctors, teachers, educators, mothers – after a year of crisis, it is clear not only to those affected that something has to change. The system is failing in the face of rising infection rates, failing to provide digital education, and leaving systemically important workers to deal with multiple burdens.
Women have dealt with the main burden of unpaid and low-paid care work (Source), and not just since the outbreak of the Corona pandemic. Care institutions use profitability as an argument when it comes to low pay for caregivers. But the crisis shows that capitalist thinking gets us nowhere when solidarity is needed. Higher salaries are of no use if there is a shortage of nursing staff in the short and long term.
The crisis exposes the patriarchal structures that pervade our society: When school and after-school care close, who takes care of home schooling, childcare and meals? Forty-nine percent of the female population suffers from the added burden of increased care work; only 30 percent of male respondents have said the same about themselves. Domestic violence cases also increased last year (Source). The patriarchy holds us firmly in its grip, because the stereotypical role of the caring housewife and mother, long thought to be outdated, is returning as if it was normal in these times of crisis.
Let’s put an end to the old norms and to the new pressure to perform! We are on strike!
On March 8, 2021 – 14.30 p.m. – demonstration and rally at Rathausplatz Augsburg, organized by the Women’s Strike Committee.
